Meet the Team Covering Mobile World Congress

With Mobile World Congress less than a week away, questions are already flying around about what’s being announced. The most notable of which, what will Samsung announce if its not the Galaxy S III, are the Huawei Diamond rumours true, and will HTC have ended its lawsuit with Vivid Entertainment?

It’s no easy task covering events, producing countless videos and photos away from a quiet and controlled environment, but we don’t want you feeling left out. During the week of the event, our UK-based team will be upping-shop and moving their production efforts to Barcelona. James Bricknell (left) will be presenting . . . READ ON »

Forums Added for Nokia Lumia 900 and Motorola Droid 4

Forums Added for Nokia Lumia 900 and Motorola Droid 4

Two new XDA forum additions to mention today: the Nokia Lumia 900 and the Motorola Droid 4. The Lumia 900 is a Windows Phone 7.5 phone with similar slick hardware to what is found on the Lumia 800. The 900 is nearly identical to the 800 except that is has a larger screen and AT&T LTE capability. The Droid 4, on the other hand, is the fourth-generation of one of the first Android phones ever, the Motorola Droid. It has an improved keyboard layout and design over the Droid 3, plus it adds a faster 1.2GHz dual-core . . . READ ON »

Big Changes Coming to XDA Marketplace on 10 March

Big Changes Coming to XDA Marketplace on 10 March

We allow people to buy and sell in our XDA Marketplace forum. We realize that this is a great service to many, as it enables trading and selling of devices so that our members can always try to have the latest and greatest mobile devices.

Historically, we have taken a hands-off approach to the Marketplace, as our primary focus was to keep the XDA forums clean to enable the best environment possible for development. To avoid scams, we installed a feedback system last year that made users accountable. But, that hasn’t been enough.

Effective 10 March, we will be placing . . . READ ON »

Forum Added for AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note

Forum Added for AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note

The Galaxy Note’s massive 5.3″ screen will soon be shown on AT&T store shelves. It’ll be offered in white or carbon blue, and with a different hardware configuration than the international version which is already seeing strong support from developers on XDA. Instead of the 1.4GHz dual-core Exynos found on the already-released version, the AT&T variant has a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon from Qualcomm. Because of these differences, we decided to give the AT&T Galaxy Note its own section on XDA.. . . READ ON »

Voting on SOPA and PIPA Delayed: a Win for XDA and the Web

XDA, along with many other sites across the web, went dark on January 18th in protest of two pieces of legislation that, if passed, could dramatically impact the free exchange of information on the internet. We’re excited to report that as a result of the negative backlash against SOPA and PIPA, voting on these two bills has been indefinitely delayed.

Representative Lamar Smith, the Texas Republican who is chairman of the Judiciary Committee, remarked:

After vowing two days ago to move forward, Mr. Smith said in a statement on Friday: “The committee remains committed to finding a solution to the

Forum Added for Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7

Forum Added for Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7

The Galaxy Tab 7.7 is the proper successor to the tablet that started it all, the original Samsung Galaxy Tab. For many, the smaller 7″ screen size of the original Tab was just perfect. The Tab 7.7 has a slightly larger display, but this time it’s higher resolution at 1280×800 instead of 1024×600, and it’s of the Super AMOLED Plus variety, instead of LCD as found on the original Galaxy Tab. Inside it has a 1.4GHz Exynos CPU with 1GB of RAM, and it ships with Android 3.2 but will be upgradable to Android 4.0. It’ll soon show up . . . READ ON »

XDA is Back; SOPA/PIPA Still a Threat

XDA is Back; SOPA/PIPA Still a Threat

We want to thank all of you for signing our pledge today. We hit 50,000 signatures much faster than expected (actually, we had over 80,000 before eliminating duplicate IPs). We debated staying dark longer, but are keeping our commitment to XDA members to return online at the 50,000 mark.

We know that sites like Wikipedia will continue to raise awareness among the general public. We hope more savvy users–like those on XDA–will continue to be the loudest and most vocal opponents of SOPA and PIPA. We all have the most to lose. Whether you signed our pledge or not, please . . . XDA to Go Dark on Jan 18th at 8AM; You Can Help Bring Us Back Online

XDA is a community built on openness and sharing. It has flourished because of our ability to freely exchange information, ideas, and development. The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the Senate and Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the House give copyright holders the ability to more easily shut down sites (with mere accusations and without due process) that *might* be in violation of copyright laws. It was because of GoDaddy’s initial support for this legislation that we moved to another registrar. If you are unfamiliar with the particulars of the bills, read up on them on Wikipedia.

Forums Added for Galaxy Y GT-S5360 and Galaxy W I8150

By popular request, we’ve added forums for the Samsung Galaxy Y GT-S5360 and the Galaxy W I8150. The former is an affordable (and hackable) Android 2.3 smartphone with a pocket-sized form factor thanks to its 3.0″ HVGA display. The latter is a more advanced Android 2.3 smartphone that has a 1.4GHz Snapdragon CPU with 512MB of RAM. Click on to the Galaxy Y and Galaxy W forums!. . . READ ON »

XDA’s 10 Post Rule

XDA’s 10 Post Rule

On XDA, our main focus is and always will be to foster open development for our mobile devices. With that in mind, the development sub-sections found for every device on XDA are where all of the development activity happens: it’s where developers post ROMs, radios, and root instructions. It’s also where XDA members can provide constructive feedback to the developers that generously provide their work, for free, to everyone.

Early last year, we put in place what we call the “10 Post Rule” in an effort to protect the development forums on XDA. We were finding that many new . . . READ ON »

Winners Of WakeVoice – A Talking Alarm Clock

Winners Of WakeVoice – A Talking Alarm Clock

We ran a contest last week where we gave away 20 licenses of WakeVoice. Time is now up and we’ve tallied all the entries to pick out those 20 lucky winners; some were handpicked for their creative and amusing comments, the rest was randomly chosen. All winners have gotten PMs with instructions to send Livven the IMEI (MEID for CDMA) code of their Android device, so the developer, ADNFX Mobile, can get them their license for the Android Market.

Here are the winners: . . . READ ON »

XDA’s Favorite Phone and Tablet of 2011 Contest: Vote Now!

A few weeks ago we ran a contest asking users to submit videos telling us why they wanted to win one of two devices, the ASUS Transformer and Samsung Galaxy S II. The devices are being given away because they won Tablet and Phone of 2011 according to XDA Members, something Samsung was so happy about, they offered to give away three Galaxy S II’s on T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon. And we’ve stepped up to offer a shiny new Asus Tranformer tablet for the contest as well, making for a total of four devices to give away. Finalists have been . . . READ ON »
